1989. Beneath The Remains

The third album by band Sepultura, Released 7 April . It was an immediate success and became known in thrash metal circles as a classic on the order of Slayer’s Reign in Blood. as well as a gaining a place in their all-time top 40 death metal records.  ”The complete absence of filler here makes this one of the most essential death/thrash metal albums of all time.”

A long European and American tour furthered the band’s reputation, despite the fact that they were still very limited English speakers. Their first US show was held on October 31, 1989 at the Ritz in New York City, opening for Danish heavy metal band King Diamond. The band filmed its first video for the single “Inner Self”.

Max Cavalera travelled to New York in February 1988 and spent a whole week negotiating with the Roadrunner label. Although they offered a 7-record deal to Sepultura, the label was unsure of the band’s sale potential. The album’s budget was a small amount by the label’s standards ($8,000), but in the end the cost was almost twice its original budget.

Scott Burns, who had previously engineered records by Florida extreme metal acts Obituary, Death and Morbid Angel, was the chosen producer. Burns agreed to work for a low fee ($2,000) because he was curious about Brazil. Sepultura spent the last half of December 1988 recording the album at Nas Nuvens Studio in Rio de Janeiro, from 8 pm to 5 am.

This was their first album to feature a Michael Whelan cover art, The art was supposed to be the cover of Obituary ’s album Cause of Death.

the album featuring Kelly Shaefer (Atheist) and John Tardy (Obituary) - Background vocals on Stronger Than Hate.

These ones are some of the best compositions ever by the Brazilian group and this masterpiece enters, Sepultura is proof that a band from Brazil could have as much potential as one from Germany or the US. Their souped up Slayer-style metal made them a few of the catalysts for death metal’s reign of the underground in the 90’s. It’s easy to see why, since “Beneath the Remains” contains not only the anger found in all of thrash metal, but also the spirit of more determined musicians. The band would release one more opus, “Arise”, and after that, let’s just say not much good came out of them. It’s a shame, really, ‘cos the band went the way of Metallica.

Max Cavalera    Igor Cavalera    Paulo Jr    Andreas Kisser
